Chemex coffee is a popular method of brewing coffee that produces a smooth and clean taste. It was invented in 1941 by a chemist named Dr. Peter Schlumbohm and has since become a favorite among coffee enthusiasts. If you’re a Canadian coffee lover looking to try Chemex coffee, here are some tips to get you started.
Get the right equipment:
To make Chemex coffee, you’ll need a Chemex brewer, Chemex filters, a kettle, and a scale. Chemex brewers come in various sizes, so choose one that fits your coffee needs. Chemex filters are thicker than regular coffee filters, which helps to remove any unwanted flavors and oils from the coffee.
Choose the right coffee:
The coffee you use in your Chemex brewer will greatly impact the taste of your coffee. Choose high-quality coffee beans that are freshly roasted and ground just before brewing. Look for beans with a medium roast level, as they tend to work best with the Chemex brewing method.
Measure your coffee and water:
To get the perfect cup of Chemex coffee, you’ll need to measure both your coffee and water. A good rule of thumb is to use 1 gram of coffee for every 15-16 grams of water. Use a scale to ensure accuracy, and make sure your water is heated to the right temperature, between 195-205°F (90-96°C).
Brew your coffee:
Place your Chemex filter in the brewer and rinse it with hot water to remove any paper taste. Discard the water, then add your coffee grounds to the filter. Slowly pour the hot water over the coffee, making sure to saturate all the grounds. Allow the coffee to bloom for about 30 seconds, then continue pouring the rest of the water over the coffee in a circular motion. Wait for the coffee to finish dripping, then remove the filter and enjoy your freshly brewed Chemex coffee.
